Faithless

Browse piano sheets by Faithless on Zen Virtual Piano. Faithless were founded in 1995, with Maxi Jazz, born Maxwell Fraser in 1957, among the founding members at nearly 40. His musical beginnings were in hip-hop, and he had been rapping on the South London scene since the mid-1980s, a time when he also did stints on pirate radio. The band was nominated for Best British Dance Act at the Brit Awards in 1999. A rap background on the South London scene, beside a Brit Awards nomination for Best British Dance Act, may suggest a band whose dance-music profile sat alongside a rapper's roots. Stints on pirate radio in the mid-1980s, beside an age of nearly 40 at the founding, may point to years of musical activity before the band formed. One member recalls that Insomnia was written in a garden shed, where producer Rollo Armstrong had his studio, and that a day inside followed by a night of DJing felt like permanent jetlag. One member credits Underworld with the idea of saving a big keyboard riff for late in the song, since that band builds tension by simply waiting and waiting, then bang. One member remembers Rollo phoning to ask for words for a new dance track: twenty minutes with a notepad, lyrics finished in the studio the next evening, and around 25 minutes to record the vocals. Underworld's way of building tension, beside a member DJing all night while the song was written, may hint at a track shaped by ideas from other acts and by late-night DJ work. One member says they did not suffer from insomnia but had just had an abscess on a tooth so painful that it kept them awake. The original album version of Insomnia ran nine minutes; one member recalls Radio 1 saying there was no hook and no chorus, so they played what that member calls a ridiculous gig at the Jazz Cafe in London to let people know they existed. Pete Tong and other top DJs kept playing the tune through a season in Ibiza, and Insomnia then got a second chance at the charts toward the end of 1996. Radio 1's remark about no hook or chorus, set beside Ibiza DJs playing the tune incessantly, may suggest that clubs and radio took different views of the track. After six studio albums and a hiatus from 2010, they toured again in 2015; Maxi Jazz left the following year. The Guardian also says he had a funk group, the E-Type Boys, and was an associate director of Crystal Palace FC. He died peacefully in his sleep at his home in London on December 23, 2022, at 65; The Guardian said a live tour, their first in eight years and including a return to Glastonbury, would be the first without him. A funk group and a football-club post, beside his place as a founding member of Faithless, may hint at interests that reached beyond the band.
