The group was formed through I-LAND, a global artist development project that aired on Mnet for about three months starting in June 2020. The name draws on the hyphen that connects one word to another, meaning six different boys connecting to discover one another and grow together. A name built on a hyphen suggests a group that presents itself as a set of connections, not as six separate stories. NME wrote that their singles often carry a sense of impassioned restraint, yet the group is just as comfortable getting rowdily aggressive, as on Future Perfect (Pass the Mic) in 2022, or sweet and lovelorn, like the viral 2021 hit Polaroid Love. Calling one group both restrained and rowdy can be read as a sign that its songs are hard to describe with a single word. The reissue Dimension: Answer arrived on 10 January 2022 with three new tracks, including the lead single Blessed-Cursed and Polaroid Love, which had been performed at the En-Connect: Companion concert on 19 November 2021. Sunoo told Rolling Stone that they faced the reality of the world while looking for answers to their dilemma and set out to find their own answer and story. With Bite Me the group received its twelfth music show win on Mnet’s M Countdown, their first win on that show, and the next day another on Music Bank. Jay contributed to the lyrics of Whodunit, a song by the Japanese rock band Glay. A music show win for the group’s own song and a lyric credit on another band’s song can be read as two different ways of appearing in the music world.
