E. L. Catlin

Browse piano sheets by E. L. Catlin on Zen Virtual Piano. E. L. Catlin, a Chicago union musician according to the publisher's blurb, was the composer of Sympathetic Jasper, published by the Stark Music Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The ragpiano.com page says there appears to have been only one printing of Sympathetic Jasper by the house of Stark, a somewhat rare Stark work from outside Missouri or New York, most likely handled through the mail. A remark on the ragpiano.com page calls Jasper sympathetic and also intelligent and snappy, in keeping with a Chicago union musician. A Chicago composer and a St. Louis publisher, set beside a work that Stark most likely handled through the mail, may point to a composer and a publisher who worked at a distance. Born and raised in Chicago, the young Edward was the fifth of seven children of the professional musician Murray Bartlett Catlin and his wife Katherine, whose maiden name was also Murray. Many musical styles were within hearing in the city, and it is not clear who may have trained him, though Chicago had many competent teachers, among them a conservatory run by Florenz Ziegfeld, Sr., where many ragtime-era composers studied. He set out on his own at an early age, and city directories show him as a musician in 1900, the year he turned nineteen, alongside his father. A father who was a professional musician, and a son shown as a musician in the 1910 census, may suggest a trade that ran through the family. He had also married, perhaps eloped, Elizabeth A. Powers on October 31, 1899. The 1910 census shows him as a musician with his own business, which suggests an independent player taking work wherever bands or venues would have him. In 1906 the M. Witmark company issued his song My Amber Lady; no further published work is known, so Sympathetic Jasper and My Amber Lady seem to make up all his known output. A musician with his own business in 1910, and only two known works, may suggest that composing was one strand of a life in which he worked as a musician. His wife Elizabeth died in Chicago on November 30, 1912. Edward died 21 days later, on December 21. Both were buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois, near Chicago. A childhood in a city with many competent teachers, and a burial at Oakridge Cemetery near that city, may hint at a musician whose known life stayed close to Chicago.
