The Netherlands chose Laurence internally in January 2019 for the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv; the nomination came from Ilse DeLange, whom he had kept in touch with since The Voice. Arriving as the main favourite, he went on to win the contest with a total of 498 points. A nomination by a former coach, followed by a win as the favourite, makes the contest read as the end of a long thread rather than a surprise. Laurence was born in Spijkenisse and grew up in Hellevoetsluis; writing his own songs as a teenager gave him an escape from being bullied. He started out at the Rock Academy in Tilburg, playing in several school bands; one of them, The Slick and Suited, was his own, formed in 2013, and it went on to perform at Eurosonic Noorderslag. On the fifth season of The Voice of Holland he chose Ilse DeLange as his coach and got as far as the semi-finals before he was eliminated. Songs written as an escape and then school bands and a televised contest show several stages for a writer who started out in private. He left The Slick in March 2016 and graduated from the Rock Academy in 2017; he and Jihad Rahmouni wrote the music for Closer, a song on the K-pop duo TVXQ's 2018 album. In February 2020 he revealed that oxygen deprivation at birth had given him a motor disorder affecting his right hand. Writing a song for a K-pop duo from a base in the Netherlands suggests a songwriter whose work was already crossing borders before the contest. Laurence wrote Arcade while attending the Tilburg Rock Academy and worked on it for over two years, mostly with Wouter Hardy; the song was written and composed by Laurence, Joel Sjöö, Wouter Hardy and Will Knox. In Laurence's words to WiwiBloggs, Arcade is a story of looking for the love of your life, and of hoping to reach something that seems out of reach. The pop song opens with four chords played on piano, with a simple piano riff and overdubbed vocals, and in February 2020 it won an Edison Award for Best Pop Song of the Year. Two years spent on a song that opens with four piano chords hints at patience behind a plain-sounding track.
