Conan Gray was born on 5 December 1998 in Lemon Grove, California, a suburb of San Diego, and as a preteen he settled in Georgetown, Texas, staying through the rest of his teenage years. Much of his art and music was inspired by his life in central Texas. Gray set up his official YouTube channel in 2013 and began making videos at 15, and those early videos covered subjects such as baking and mostly centered on his everyday life. A teenager filming baking videos in a small Texas town can be read as a very ordinary start to a musical career. Gray recounts his entry into the music world: “Writing music for me was my escape, and my way to get out of my town both physically and mentally. When I wrote ‘Idle Town,’ I was a senior in high school and I recorded it in my bedroom and I didn’t have any idea what would happen.” He says the first YouTube video he ever watched was the music video for “Teardrops on My Guitar” by Taylor Swift, and he cites Swift as having shaped his songwriting. The first YouTube video he ever watched being a Taylor Swift music video, beside a song he recorded in his own bedroom, can be read as a songwriter shaped by what he watched online and by what he made at home. As of October 2019, Gray’s music had gained over 250 million streams across all platforms, and he received the 2019 Shorty Award for Best YouTube Musician. In October 2019 he embarked on the Comfort Crowd Tour, his second headlining tour of North America, with support from the New Zealand musician Benee. He released the single “Fake” with the American singer Lauv in October 2020. A move from bedroom recordings to headlining tours and collaborations can be read as a rapid widening of his audience. On 31 January 2024, Gray announced his third studio album, Found Heaven. “Lonely Dancers,” the album’s fourth single, followed on 9 February, and the album itself was released on 5 April. A song recorded in a bedroom by a high-school senior and a third studio album announced in 2024 can be read as two very different scales of making music.
