Browse piano sheets by Bruno Mars on Zen Virtual Piano. Bruno Mars, whose real name is Peter Gene Hernandez, was born on 8 October 1985 in Honolulu, Hawaii; his father, Pete, was a Latin percussionist and his mother, Bernadette, was a singer. His family performed a Las Vegas-style revue at Waikiki Beach that included Motown hits, doo-wop melodies and celebrity impersonations, and he began picking up instruments early, teaching himself piano, guitar and drums. Stage habits formed at home before any record deal give his later live shows a long rehearsal behind them. A boy growing up inside a family show had a stage before he had a career. At Roosevelt High School he and several friends formed a band, the School Boys, performing classic oldies hits alongside his family’s act at the Ilikai Hotel in Honolulu. A school band set beside the family act can be read as a first step toward a group of his own. After graduating he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music, and while he was initially signed by Motown Records in 2004, they dropped him from the label a year later with nothing to show for it. A contract dropped after a year puts a setback between the family stage and the studio years that followed. He was then introduced to the songwriter Phillip Lawrence, who agreed to help him compose material, but the pair were repeatedly rejected by major record labels, so they decided to write songs for other artists. The songwriting and production trio the Smeezingtons, formed along with Ari Levine, created a raft of chart-toppers for other artists, including a CeeLo Green hit. A song sold reluctantly to another act, and chart-toppers made for others, show writing done in service of other voices. In 2008 “Lost” was reluctantly sold to Menudo, before Flo Rida’s 2009 hit “Right ’Round” was written. A decision to write for other artists after repeated rejections shows a writer finding a route when his own path was closed. His album’s lead single “Just the Way You Are” was another hit and later won him his first Grammy Award, for Best Pop Vocal Performance, in 2011. In 2012 the Grammy-nominated singles “Locked Out of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man” debuted atop the chart. In December 2013 he began his first residency at The Chelsea in Las Vegas, and in February 2014 he performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. In February 2021 he and the rapper Anderson .Paak announced they were releasing a collaboration album under the name Silk Sonic. A Grammy for one single and, years later, a Super Bowl halftime show show the stage growing around him.
