It formed in New York City in 1993. The Pace twins were born in Milan, Italy, and grew up in Montreal before moving to Boston to study jazz. After earning bachelor’s degrees, they entered the New York City underground music scene and met Makino, a film student at the time, through mutual friends. The band named itself after a song on the 1981 EP A Taste of DNA by the no wave group DNA. Its self-titled debut album came out in 1995, and bassist Toko Yasuda replaced Maki Takahashi shortly afterwards, playing on the second album, La Mia Vita Violenta, also released in 1995. The earliest albums were noted for their noise rock influences, though the sound evolved by the early 2000s. “For the Damaged Coda” is a song written and performed by the band, released on June 6, 2000, through Touch and Go Records as the eleventh and final track on its fifth studio album, Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons.
