Benjamin Biolay

Browse piano sheets by Benjamin Biolay on Zen Virtual Piano. Benjamin Biolay was born on January 20, 1973, in Villefranche-sur-Saône, in a musical setting. He studied at the Notre-Dame de Mongré school there. In his youth he learned the violin and the tuba, notably in a fanfare, then entered the regional conservatory of Lyon, where he learned the trombone, and left in 1990 with two first prizes. Violin, tuba and trombone by 1990 suggest a musician trained across a wide range of instruments, from a fanfare's tuba to the conservatory's trombone. In the early 1990s he settled in Paris and put out a few confidential demos. His reputation grew at first through collaborations with other artists. His first commercial and public success came in 2000 as a writer, through the songs he wrote with Keren Ann for Henri Salvador on the album Chambre avec vue, which sold a million copies and won a Victoire de la musique in 2001. Jardin d'hiver, co-written by Biolay and Keren Ann, appeared on Keren Ann's first solo album, La Biographie de Luka Philipsen, made in 1999 and released in 2000, and opens Chambre avec vue, recorded over several months from 1999 and released on December 12, 2000. A song co-written with Keren Ann that opens Henri Salvador's album, set beside a reputation that grew through collaborations and writing, may suggest that working with others shaped his early career. The 2004 soundtrack of Arnaud Viard's Clara et Moi consists mostly of songs he wrote or performed, and the same year he put out the album Home with his wife. He was dropped by his record company after two further rock-leaning albums, in 2005 and 2007, and then started work on La Superbe, his first independent release, which came out on Naïve in 2009. A 2004 soundtrack, an album made with his wife and a 2009 independent release on Naïve may point to a body of work spread across several formats. At the Victoires de la musique in 2021 he received the prize for male performer and the prize for album of the year. His part in Sylvie Verheyde's Stella earned him a nomination for the César for best supporting actor in 2009. On September 9, 2022, he released his tenth album, Saint-Clair, a tribute to the mount that rises above Sète, the town his family comes from. Prizes for singing and an acting nomination, and a tenth album named after the mount above his family's town, may hint at a career moving between the stage, the screen and home ground.
