Born in Stockholm, Sweden, on 8 September 1989, Tim Bergling was the son of the actress Anki Lidén and of Klas Bergling, who ran an office supply business. He was 16 when he started making music, prompted by a brother who also worked as a DJ; a pirated copy of FL Studio was his teacher. On the Laidback Luke Internet forum he posted under the user name Timberman to get feedback on his music. Posting early tracks on a forum for feedback suggests a producer who wanted other ears on the work before he had an audience. His real name was already in use when he set up his page on Myspace, so he chose Avicii instead, a respelling of Avīci, which in Buddhism is the lowest level of naraka, or hell. His music was mainly pop-oriented house, often blended with folk, country, bluegrass, soul and blues. The anthem for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 was composed in April 2013 by Avicii together with the former ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and it was first performed in the May 2013 final. A stage name chosen because a real name was taken, and an anthem written with two former ABBA members, put practical choices and well-known company in the same account. Stories, his next album, was described to Rolling Stone in July 2014 as "a lot more song-oriented", with collaborators named as Jon Bon Jovi, Serj Tankian, Chris Martin, Wyclef Jean and Matisyahu. Waiting for Love was released on 22 May 2015 as the lead single from Stories, with lyrics also co-written by Aldred. An album he called more song-oriented and a lead single with co-written lyrics point in the same direction, toward songs rather than only tracks. He announced in March 2016 that he was retiring from touring, and he collected four MTV Europe Music Awards, two International Dance Music Awards, an American Music Award and a Billboard Music Award. The Tim Bergling Foundation will begin by supporting people and groups that work on mental illness and suicide prevention, with further activity in climate change, development assistance, nature conservation and endangered species. A list of awards beside the aims of a foundation sets out two kinds of record, one of achievements and one of causes.
