The discovery of the baptismal record by Mingozzi in 2018 definitively ends the hypothesis of a birth in Nepi on 3 April 1639. Stradella's musical training probably took place in Rome, and music was not foreign to the family, since in 1609 his father saw to the printing in Rome of Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger's first book of madrigals for five voices. A baptism in Bologna, beside a probable training in Rome, may suggest that Stradella's musical life took shape in more than one city. Certain news of Stradella's compositions is lacking before the age of 23 or 24. In August 1674, commissioned by Gaspare Altieri, Stradella set Il duello, a serenata for Christina of Sweden to verses by Sebastiano Baldini. In 1675 Stradella composed the motet Pugna, certamen, militia est vita for the taking of vows by Angelica Lante, daughter of the dukes. Set beside the father's 1609 printing of madrigals, the 1675 motet may show music running through two generations of the family. In Venice, Stradella gave singing lessons to Agnese van Uffel, a ward of the Venetian nobleman Alvise Contarini, and fled with her to Turin. On the evening of 10 October 1677, returning from a visit to Agnese, Stradella was attacked by hired killers probably sent by Contarini. Does a motet composed in 1675, beside an attack in 1677 by hired killers probably sent by Contarini, point to a composing life that also met danger? In the 1678-79 season Stradella set for the Falcone theatre the reworking of two Venetian dramas by Nicolo Minato, and also a new comic drama, Il Trespolo tutore. If a serenata for Christina of Sweden is set beside dramas for the Falcone theatre, then Stradella's music may have reached more than one kind of audience. The BBC says Stradella wrote the first datable work scored for concerto grosso instrumentation in 1674, well before Corelli's Opus 6, and produced one of the earliest known comic operas. The BBC adds that Stradella wrote in all the genres of the period, in over 300 compositions. Stradella died on 25 February 1682, murdered in a night ambush for reasons that were never made clear, and was buried in Genoa in S. Maria delle Vigne. Il duello and the concerto grosso work the BBC dates to 1674 both belong to the same year.
