Alec Holowka (30 October 1983 – 31 August 2019) was a Canadian indie game developer and a co-founder of the independent game companies Infinite Ammo, Infinite Fall and Bit Blot. He was introduced to programming at the age of eight when his father bought him the book Basic Fun, and he eventually began working with a freeware group called Zaphire Productions. A single book from a parent can set a direction long before anyone calls it a career. He then worked for a number of failed startups, including one in Winnipeg, working on a PC multiplayer fantasy action title, and on a combat racer in Vancouver for the Xbox 360. He acted as sound engineer on the 2006 freeware title I’m O.K – A Murder Simulator, a response to the American lawyer Jack Thompson’s “A Modest Video Game Proposal.” He met Derek Yu in the comments on the technology website Slashdot, in a post about Thompson’s proposal, and together with Chris Hanson and Phil Jones they formed the group “Thompsonsoft.” A group name built from the lawyer’s surname hints at a team that began as a shared response to his proposal. After that project’s release Holowka introduced Yu to a project he had been working on independently; Yu was interested, and the two officially formed the developer Bit Blot. Work begun alone can find its partner the moment someone is willing to look at it. In 2013 Holowka and the independent animator Scott Benson crowdfunded the game Night in the Woods, which was released in 2017 to critical acclaim and won the BAFTA in “Narrative.” A narrative award for a game made with an animator hints at how closely story and visuals were bound together.
