Aivi & Surasshu is the award-winning composition duo that scored the soundtrack for the animated series Steven Universe on Cartoon Network. The duo also composed the series’ credits themes, “Love Like You” and “Being Human,” in close collaboration with Rebecca Sugar, who wrote the lyrics. Two themes written in close collaboration with the lyricist tie the duo’s music directly to the show’s own voice. Aivi is married to the electronic musician surasshu and is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. A married pair who also compose as a duo suggest a partnership that reaches from home life into the studio. Aivi, one half of the duo, has said that their parents loved music and always had cassette tapes and vinyls playing in the house, that they fell in love by singing Vietnamese songs together and sang to Aivi a lot, and that constantly listening to music as a child primed Aivi to be a musician. Aivi began composing at age 12, inspired by the music of Nintendo games and Yamaha keyboard demos, and has said that they fell in love with Koji Kondo’s music at 10, after the family got a Nintendo 64, and that their first foray into game music was figuring out how to play music from Super Mario 64 by ear on the piano. A household full of recordings and a first game melody picked out by ear both start from listening. Aivi received a Bachelor of Arts in Music with honors from UC Davis, where they studied composition with Professor Kurt Rohde. A music degree with composition study gives one half of the duo a formal grounding in the craft. Aivi has said that Cryamore’s music is very special because it was their first big soundtrack, and that the early demos for Cryamore are what caught the attention of the Steven Universe team. A first big soundtrack whose demos caught a television team’s attention shows how an early project can open a door. For Gilda’s theme, Aivi has said, they collaborated with Renko, who with surasshu used to be in a Touhou band called Orange Jam: surasshu composed the music, Renko wrote the lyrics and sang, and Aivi helped supervise production and played a jazzy piano solo. Aivi has said, “But my secret weapon is collaboration! I blend digital music with live performances and work with other musicians in the game music community whenever I can,” adding that when they let go of their ideas and make room for other people’s contributions, the songs they make together become really beautiful. Calling collaboration a secret weapon describes a way of working in which the music is shared among several hands.
