Canon And Gigue In D Major, P.37 by Johann Pachelbel

Johann Pachelbel's “Canon and Gigue in D major,” P.37, is a two-movement chamber work whose famous first movement is only half the title. The original scoring uses three violins over basso continuo; familiar piano versions are later translations of that texture. The Canon builds its calm momentum through a repeating bass pattern and staggered entries in the upper voices. Each return adds another layer to the same harmonic ground, while the companion Gigue turns toward a livelier Baroque dance. The Canon's modern fame has often pushed that second movement into the background. The work's early history is less definite than its cultural reputation. Sources place its composition around the 1680s, but there is no firm evidence for the often-repeated wedding story or a known premiere. A piano arrangement can preserve the layered design without pretending that its keyboard texture is Pachelbel's original ensemble.
