Gymnopédie No.1 by Erik Satie

Erik Satie's “Gymnopédie No. 1” opens with an unusual kind of stillness. The first piece in his Trois Gymnopédies, it is marked “Lent et douloureux,” and its slow triple-meter phrases let small changes in harmony and emphasis carry the movement. Satie completed the set in the late 1880s, but the three pieces did not all appear together at first. The music's repeated patterns and restrained gestures later helped make it a touchstone for listeners drawn to spare, atmospheric piano writing. Claude Debussy's later orchestration of Nos. 1 and 3 brought another layer of public recognition—and a numbering reversal that can confuse recordings and arrangements. This catalog entry is the solo-piano No. 1, so its quiet balance should remain the center of the performance.
