Ed Sheeran was born on 17 February 1991 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and is a British singer-songwriter known for a genre-crossing style infused with folk, rock, R&B, pop and hip-hop. He grew up surrounded by art and music, with parents who worked in the arts and a brother who would go on to become a music composer, and the family moved to Framlingham, Suffolk. A house of artists and musicians can be read as an early, ordinary closeness to the work. Growing up around people who made art for a living suggests a household where a life in music was not far from the ordinary. He joined his church choir at age four and learned to play guitar at age eleven, and he also played the cello when he was younger. He has said that he was inspired to become a performer at about 11 years old after watching the Irish musician Damien Rice perform live, and that he began writing his own songs soon after. A choir at four and a guitar at eleven show a musician assembled from several first encounters. While still in high school he self-released the EP The Orange Room (2005) and the albums Spinning Man (2005), Ed Sheeran (2006) and Want Some? (2007) to little attention before moving to London to pursue a music career. Four records made while still in high school, before a move to London to pursue a music career, show groundwork laid early. “Perfect” was the first track he wrote for his third studio album, ÷, a romantic ballad focusing on traditional marriage that was inspired by listening to the rapper Future with James Blunt in Ibiza. He has said, “I booked the studio for the day, and I had that and I was like, right, let me just flesh that out. And the song happened and was sort of finished that day. I knew it was special.” A song begun with a favourite track in mind and sort of finished that day reads as a sketch that found its shape quickly. He produced the song himself with help from Will Hicks and recorded it with strings orchestration from his brother Matthew Sheeran, the first time the brothers had collaborated on a song. In December 2017 he was made a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to music and charity. A song about marriage, sort of finished that day and strung with his brother’s strings, can be read as a family project as well as a personal one.
